Happy Full Sturgeon moon on August 19 at 18.26 UTC in Aquarius, a seasonal blue moon as it will be third in a series of four in the summer season under a more recent definition; blue moons are traditionally two full moons in the same month (see www.timeanddate,com for full moon times in your location)
The name Sturgeon Moon recalls the giant prehistoric long living fish, dating back 200 million years, some of whom may survive up to 150 years. Once sturgeon were plentiful at the time of this moon in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain and though in smaller numbers today, still herald the coming of the harvest.
Some sources say this is also a Supermoon, the first of four, so called because it appears larger and brighter than normal as it passes closest to the earth, but others mark the next Supermoon as September 18.
A kick start to wise action as full, blue, Aquarian and maybe supermoon energies combine to launch a reassessment of using power wisely and moderately, not squandering it in angry exchanges, personal and global . These lethal tantrums destroy what we have created like furious toddlers smashing a favourite toy and then crying because it is broken. This is a very balanced moon, that seeks to acknowledge that there are no instant fixes to problems caused by humankind’s misjudgement, but that it is never too late to start supergluing the broken pieces of the world together.
On a blue moon we can more easily contact our ancestors, perhaps by preparing their favorite meal and having a family evening with old photos and memories, on zoom for absent family members. Pick or buy flowers on the blue moon and press to preserve one or two as a reminder of what is still possible, for next month’s Equinox second harvest lies ahead. This moon can also be seen full on Sunday and Tuesday if you miss the main event.
The full moon in Aquarius is one that moves life forward in unique ways, furthering original ventures, bringing the success of cherished inventions and money-spinning schemes, that are more likely to succeed than under almost any other full moon of the year.
The Aquarian full moon is good also for developing or rekindling friendships pushed into the background by time or circumstances and for exploring or learning alternative medicine and making moderate sustainable changes in lifestyle to bring us back into harmony with ourselves.
The sturgeon has in her long time on earth seen many sorrows, witnessed many tragedies, attributed to God, the Goddess or uncaring humankind. She survives though in far fewer numbers than when the moon was first given this name, a reminder of what is enduring and worthwhile, even if under threat.
- Light three dark blue candles one for each night from the 18th as the moon grows full, asking Cambiel the Aquarian global guardian angel who tries to protect us against our own mistakes, Guard the vulnerable from our self-inflicted sorrows, restore moderation, bring relief on the morrow. May the good days for which we yearn, through shared endeavours once more return. Leave each candle to burn through safely on its own night and continue with new candles through the waning moon if you wish.
May this moon restore balance so we greet the Pisces full supermoon in unity as we stand in our different parts of the world under the same moon.
