This supermoon is also the Harvest moon, the name given to the moon closest to the Autumn Equinox on September 22 this year in the northern hemisphere.
This makes it the latest date for a Harvest moon to shine since 1987, for Harvest moons generally occur in September. It is so called in different cultures because it has traditionally offered extra light for the gathering of the harvest after sunset.
